The monument erected by the choragus, the sponsor, after the theatrical play, the expenses of which he covered, won a dramatic contest held in the Theatre of Dionysos during the Great Dionysia, known also as City Dionysia. Choragic monuments had various forms, e.g. simple pedestals or temple-like constructions. On their top choragus placed the bronze tripod which he had recieved as a prize by the state.
